Two significant wildfires are currently active in western North Carolina, affecting Graham and McDowell counties.
The Haoe Lead Fire, located in the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness near Robbinsville, has burned approximately 800 acres and remains uncontained. The fire, ignited by lightning on April 12, is fueled by dry leaf litter and is challenging to manage due to rugged terrain and high winds. As a precaution, the U.S. Forest Service has closed the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Loop Trail and Recreation Area.
In McDowell County, the Bee Rock Creek Fire near Little Switzerland has expanded to over 500 acres with about 10% containment. The fire is burning through steep terrain near the Armstrong Fish Hatchery. An evacuation order is in effect for residents on Wild Acres Road off NC 226A. Approximately 180 firefighters and three helicopters are engaged in suppression efforts.
No injuries have been reported in connection with either fire. Residents are advised to stay informed through local emergency management channels and to heed any evacuation orders or safety advisories.
