Update: Fatal Crash on I-77 in Iredell County

Authorities have identified the man killed in an early morning crash on April 8 in Iredell County as 26-year-old Justyn Jack Jenkins of Mooresville.

At approximately 3:00 a.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a collision on I-77 South near mile marker 30. According to investigators, a 2019 Freightliner tractor-trailer traveling south struck a 2021 Hyundai Kona that was disabled in the roadway. The Hyundai was sitting sideways with no lights on following a previous collision.

The driver of the Hyundai, Justyn Jack Jenkins, died at the scene from his injuries. The driver of the Freightliner, a resident of Charlotte, was not injured.

The Highway Patrol reports that neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash. The southbound lanes of I-77 were closed in the area for about three hours during the investigation. No charges will be filed.
