STATESVILLE, NC – Authorities have confirmed the recovery of a man’s body following a drowning incident on Lake Norman over the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 14, near Channel Marker 20, in close proximity to the Lake Norman State Park Campgrounds.
According to information provided by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the man and a woman were boating when a personal item fell into the water. The man entered the lake in an attempt to retrieve it but soon showed signs of distress. The woman, reportedly unable to operate the boat, also entered the water in an attempt to assist. Both individuals struggled to stay afloat.
A nearby boater noticed the emergency and alerted authorities. Responders were able to rescue the woman and transport her to a hospital for treatment. The man, however, went underwater and did not resurface.
Search efforts began immediately but were interrupted by poor weather conditions. Crews resumed operations the following morning, and the man’s body was located using an underwater robotic device. Officials confirmed that neither person was wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission responded to the initial call and assisted in both the search and recovery efforts. The man’s body has been transferred to the medical examiner’s office as part of the ongoing investigation.
No additional details about the individuals involved have been released.
