The City of Statesville is advising residents, motorists, and local businesses of several upcoming road closures related to a major waterline replacement project. The work is part of a citywide effort to improve water service reliability and modernize infrastructure.
The first closure will take place on Brookdale Drive north of Carolina Avenue, in front of the DMV, from August 25 to August 28. Traffic will be detoured via Carolina Avenue North and Thomas Street. From September 2 to September 10, the intersection of Brookdale Drive and Carolina Avenue North will be closed, with traffic redirected via Woods Drive, Hartness Road, and Sherwood Lane.
Two additional closures are scheduled for early September, with exact dates to be announced. One will affect Brookdale Drive between Oakdale Drive and Carolina Avenue North, and another will be between Hartness Road and Oakdale Drive. During the latter, east entrances to Iredell Memorial Hospital will be blocked, requiring all patient and emergency vehicles to enter via Hartness Road. Businesses along Brookdale Drive, the hospital, and Northview Academy will all experience impacts to traffic flow.
Motorists are encouraged to use Hartness Road from North Center Street to access the hospital and Emergency Room. Drivers traveling on I-40 are advised to use Exit 150 (Hwy 115/North Center Street) rather than Exit 151 (Hwy 21/Sullivan Road) for better access to Hartness Road. Families traveling to Northview Academy should allow extra time due to changes in bus and car line traffic patterns.
Detour signage, overhead I-40 signs, and digital message boards will provide guidance throughout the closures. All schedules are weather-dependent, and dates marked “to be determined” will be updated when available.
The Waterline Replacement Project will replace about 5.7 miles of aging cast iron pipes, some dating back to the 1940s, with new 12-inch and 20-inch waterlines. The upgrades are expected to reduce the risk of breaks, improve system efficiency, and ensure reliable service for decades. Work began in March 2025 and is scheduled for completion in September 2026.
