Two Harmony residents were arrested following an investigation into reports of child neglect at a residence on Shaw Road, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Gregory Lillis Smith II, 34, and Chelsie Marie Smith, 35, are each facing seven counts of felony child abuse, eight counts of misdemeanor child abuse, and two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Deputies responded to the home on June 17 after receiving a call requesting a welfare check. The report alleged that eight children, ranging in age from 2 months to 16 years, were living in hazardous and unsanitary conditions.

Upon arrival, deputies found the home in a state of disrepair, with trash, feces, and infestations of insects and rodents throughout the property. The Iredell County Department of Social Services was contacted and responded to assist. Two dogs found in poor health were removed from the residence by Iredell County Animal Control.

The Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit conducted a follow-up investigation and determined that the children had been knowingly kept in unsafe living conditions by their parents. Arrest warrants were issued, and both Gregory and Chelsie Smith were taken into custody on June 21.

Gregory Smith, who is currently on active probation, was issued a $282,500 secured bond. Chelsie Smith received a $280,000 secured bond. Both are scheduled to appear in District Court on July 2.

The children have since been placed in the care of relatives, and the Department of Social Services continues its investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone who suspects child neglect or abuse to report concerns to the appropriate authorities.
