On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at approximately 11:56 AM, deputies from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Community Oriented Policing (COPS) Unit responded to a reported domestic incident at 108 Claremont Way, Mooresville, NC. Upon arrival, deputies determined that the suspect, identified as 23-year-old John Daniel Maxwell, had fled the scene in a 2012 Jeep Liberty registered to the victim.
Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop at the development’s entrance. Maxwell accelerated at high speed, swerving off the road multiple times. Due to safety concerns and the suspect’s identification, deputies terminated the pursuit while maintaining visual contact. Maxwell continued driving recklessly before fleeing south on Interstate 77.
Meanwhile, deputies at the initial location gathered evidence, and probable cause was presented to Magistrate Imes, resulting in warrants being issued for the following charges:
- Felony Assault by Strangulation
- Felony Larceny
- Misdemeanor Assault on a Female
- Misdemeanor Injury to Personal Property
- Misdemeanor Flee to Elude Arrest
- Misdemeanor Reckless Driving
- Misdemeanor Driving While License Revoked
- Misdemeanor Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle
Further investigation revealed Maxwell was out on a $100,000 bond for assault in Tennessee and had disabled his ankle monitor. Tennessee authorities confirmed that extraditable warrants would be issued.
A few hours later, deputies located Maxwell, who attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. He is currently being held at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
