RALEIGH, NC – The annual “Booze It & Lose It” campaign kicks off today, running through Jan. 1, to combat impaired driving across North Carolina.
The initiative, part of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, aims to raise awareness and reduce incidents involving alcohol, drugs, and other impairing substances.
“Festivities this time of year often involve alcohol, which unfortunately increases the risk of impaired driving,” said Mark Ezzell, GHSP director. In 2022, more than 25% of North Carolina’s traffic fatalities—471 deaths—were alcohol-related, according to the Department of Transportation.
During the campaign, law enforcement agencies statewide will increase sobriety checkpoints and patrols in high-traffic areas, reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving.
Jennifer Lichtneger, executive director of NC Mothers Against Drunk Driving, emphasized the importance of planning ahead. “Have a transportation plan before consuming alcohol or drugs. Waiting until afterward often leads to poor decisions.”
Residents are encouraged to use designated drivers, taxis, rideshare services, or public transportation to ensure safe travel this holiday season.
