October is Crime Prevention Month, and the Statesville Police Department is joining communities nationwide to raise awareness about key safety issues that impact local families.
Each year, the National Crime Prevention Council highlights areas where education and community involvement can make a meaningful difference. This year’s campaign focuses on four important topics:
Counterfeit Pills and Fake Products
Authorities are warning about the dangers of counterfeit items, particularly fake pills that may be laced with fentanyl. The police department encourages residents to talk with family members—especially teens and young adults—about the risks associated with drug use and counterfeit medications.
Violence Against Women
The campaign also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing domestic violence. Officials say breaking the cycle begins with understanding warning signs, speaking up, and offering support and resources to survivors.
Community Involvement
Local law enforcement reminds residents that crime prevention is most effective when the community works together. Programs like neighborhood watch groups and events such as Statesville’s Night Out, scheduled for tomorrow, provide opportunities for neighbors to connect and strengthen safety efforts. Firearm Safety
The department is also encouraging safe firearm storage and responsible handling practices to help prevent accidents and protect families.
Police officials say small, proactive steps—such as staying informed, getting involved, and practicing safety at home—can have a lasting impact on keeping Statesville safe.
