The City of Statesville and Statesville Public Power are warning customers about reports of individuals going door-to-door asking about high electricity usage and offering ways to reduce power bills.
Officials say there is no confirmed information about the person or company involved, or how they claim to provide savings. While some visits could be related to legitimate energy-related product sales, such as solar systems, they may also be attempts to scam residents or tamper with utility equipment. The warning follows a recent case in which someone falsely claimed to work for a gas company to gain entry into a customer’s home.
According to the city, Statesville Public Power employees will never ask to enter a home to discuss lowering a power bill or demand on-the-spot payment. All employees and contractors carry official photo identification and drive clearly marked vehicles.
Residents who are approached by someone claiming to represent the City of Statesville or Statesville Public Power are urged not to let them inside and to verify their identity by calling Statesville Public Power at 704-878-3419.
The Statesville Police Department is aware of the reports and is watching for those involved. Suspicious activity should be reported to SPD at 704-878-3406, or 911 in an emergency.
