Statesville, NC – A Statesville man was taken into custody early Sunday morning following a traffic stop conducted by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
Troy Carl Werkheiser, 56, of Doubletree Drive, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including felony possession of fentanyl, felony maintaining a vehicle for the use of a controlled substance, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and various traffic violations.
According to law enforcement officials, a deputy with the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement (ACE) Team attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Camaro for a traffic violation on Bethlehem Road. Instead of stopping immediately, the driver continued traveling before eventually pulling into a driveway on Doubletree Drive.
During the interaction, deputies reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Werkheiser was asked to exit the car, and a subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered approximately 2.23 grams of fentanyl.
Werkheiser was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was placed under a $10,000 secured bond. A District Court appearance is scheduled for February 24.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
