Statesville Council Approves Plans for Temporary Fire Station 5

by | Nov 6, 2025

During Monday night’s meeting on November 3, 2025, the Statesville City Council approved plans to move forward with the development of a new temporary Fire Station 5, a project aimed at improving response times and emergency coverage in one of the city’s most underserved areas.

The plan includes renovating an existing house on the property, constructing an apparatus bay, purchasing a used aerial truck, and hiring fifteen new personnel to staff the station. With $2 million already allocated in the Fire Station 5 Fund, no additional funding is required at this stage. City officials anticipate operations could begin as early as July 1, 2026.

Station 5 will serve a growing section of the city that currently experiences longer emergency response times. Establishing this temporary facility will allow the Statesville Fire Department to enhance coverage and improve safety for residents, businesses, and visitors. The project also supports the department’s efforts to maintain its strong ISO rating and future accreditation.

In recent months, the Fire Department completed an extensive hiring process to identify qualified candidates for the new positions. Following the council’s approval, job offers will be extended to selected candidates, allowing onboarding and training to begin early next year. The addition of Station 5 represents an investment in both infrastructure and personnel, supporting the City’s goal of providing high-quality emergency services while preparing for continued growth.

While this facility is temporary, long-term plans remain in place for a permanent Fire Station 5. City officials emphasized that the project provides an immediate and cost-effective solution without delaying essential improvements for years while permanent funding is secured.

City Manager Ron Smith said the chosen property is well-positioned to serve the city’s north side, reaching east to Highway 115 and west to U.S. 21. “This is the right site in the right place, and this plan lets us move forward now,” Smith said. “We’re making a smart, timely investment that improves response times, enhances safety, and sets the foundation for the City’s future fire service needs.”

Fire Chief Glenn Kurfees added that the decision underscores the city’s commitment to public safety. “Council’s support allows us to move forward with a plan that meets the city’s growing needs today while positioning us for the future,” Kurfees said. “This step ensures our firefighters have the resources they need to respond quickly and effectively, and that our residents continue to receive the level of service they expect and deserve.”

The approval of Fire Station 5 marks a significant step in strengthening Statesville’s emergency response network and ensuring continued protection for the community.
