State Officials Warn of Text Message Scam Targeting NCDMV Customers

RALEIGH — North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is urging residents to be cautious of a recent text message scam impersonating the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). The scam messages claim recipients owe a traffic fine and threaten legal consequences if payment is not made.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the North Carolina Department of Justice has received a rising number of complaints related to the scam. The fraudulent messages instruct individuals to click on a link to resolve an alleged traffic violation, warning that failure to do so could result in suspended driving privileges, revoked vehicle registration, or legal prosecution.

“These scams follow the same pattern as earlier toll-related text scams seen across the country,” said Attorney General Jackson. “Government agencies will never text you to demand payment or threaten legal action.”

Officials emphasize that the NCDMV does not send text messages requesting payment or issuing legal threats.

Individuals who receive suspicious messages are advised to:

  • Avoid clicking any links in the message.
  • Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Block or delete the sender’s number.
  • Report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov and the North Carolina Department of Justice at www.ncdoj.gov/complaint.

Anyone uncertain about the legitimacy of a message claiming to be from the NCDMV is encouraged to contact the agency directly at (919) 715-7000.
