State Board Launches Registration Repair Project to Update Voter Records

by | Jul 21, 2025

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has launched the Registration Repair Project, an initiative aimed at updating the voter registration records of individuals who are missing a valid identification number in the state’s database. These ID numbers—either an N.C. driver’s license or DMV-issued ID number, or the last four digits of a Social Security number—are used to verify the identity of registered voters.

Voters without this information in their records may be required to vote provisionally and provide the missing information in order to have their vote counted in future elections.

To assist voters, the State Board has created the Registration Repair Search Tool, which is updated daily. Voters can use the tool to check whether they need to take action to complete their registration.

How to Repair Your Voter Registration

If your name appears in the Registration Repair Search Tool, you can update your registration through one of the following methods:

  • Online: If you have a North Carolina driver’s license or DMV-issued ID, you can update your voter information at payments.ncdot.gov. No account is required—just select “Continue as Guest” and choose “Yes” when prompted to update your voter information.
  • In Person: Visit your county board of elections office. You’ll need to bring your N.C. driver’s license, DMV ID, or the last four digits of your Social Security number. Contact information for local boards is available via the County Boards of Elections Search. Note that updates cannot be made by phone.
  • By Mail: In early August, the State Board will send letters to voters who still need to update their registration. These mailings will include instructions, a form to complete, and a pre-addressed return envelope with postage included.
