Sinkhole Repair Progresses at Tradd and E. Front Streets Despite Unforeseen Delays

by | Jul 17, 2025

Work is ongoing at the intersection of Tradd Street and E. Front Street as crews continue efforts to repair a downtown sinkhole. While progress is being made, several unexpected underground complications have extended the original timeline for completion.

As part of a recent milestone, E. Front Street has now reopened from South Center Street to the front of Nicholson Funeral Home. This improvement has restored access to part of the affected area. However, the intersection of Tradd and E. Front remains closed as work continues.

During excavation, crews discovered a previously uncharted water line that lies directly in the path of the planned storm drain installation. In response, the City will begin relocating the water line this week. Once that relocation is complete, contractors will resume work on the storm drain system and proceed toward full repair of the intersection.

Although this added work may cause further delays, city officials say addressing the issue now is the most efficient and cost-effective solution. Taking care of it during current construction will help avoid future disruptions and ensure long-term stability at the intersection.

The City thanks residents and businesses for their continued patience and cooperation and will provide further updates as work progresses.
