STATESVILLE, N.C. — Former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, his immediate family and three others were killed Thursday morning when the private jet they were aboard crashed at Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred on December 18, 2025, shortly after the Cessna Citation C550 business jet departed and attempted to return to the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the fiery crash, which happened at about 10:15 a.m. local time on the east side of the runway. Officials said the plane, registered to a company managed by Biffle, experienced difficulties and was attempting an emergency landing when it came down and erupted in flames.

All seven people on board were killed, according to law enforcement and family representatives. Among the deceased were Biffle, 55, his wife Cristina Grossu, their son Ryder, and his daughter Emma. The other victims were identified by the families as longtime friend Craig Wadsworth, pilot Dennis Dutton, and his son Jack Dutton.

Officials said the crash left extensive damage and a large plume of smoke visible across the airport. Investigators from the NTSB and FAA took control of the scene as fire crews worked to extinguish hot spots and clear debris. The investigation is expected to take several weeks as teams analyze wreckage, weather data and flight records.

Biffle, a native of Vancouver, Washington, rose to prominence in NASCAR in the 1990s and early 2000s, amassing more than 50 national series wins and championships in both the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He was widely respected within the racing community for his competitive spirit, versatility and later humanitarian efforts, particularly for his work providing aid to communities affected by Hurricane Helene in 2024.

In a joint statement released Thursday afternoon, the families of those lost described the tragedy as “heartbreaking beyond words.” They remembered Biffle and his wife as devoted parents, and the children as joyful and beloved by all who knew them. The statement urged privacy and compassion for grieving relatives and friends as they begin the difficult process of mourning.

Reaction to the news poured in from across the motorsports world and beyond, with NASCAR issuing a statement expressing deep sorrow at the loss of Biffle and the other victims. Leaders and fans alike celebrated Biffle’s legacy both on and off the track, highlighting his contributions to the sport and his community.

The airport was closed indefinitely following the crash, and investigators are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the jet’s return and subsequent attempt to land. Weather reports indicated cloudy conditions and drizzle at the time of the accident, though officials have not yet determined whether weather played a role.

Arrangements for memorial services have not yet been announced. Family representatives said details regarding funerals and tributes will be shared once plans are finalized.
