Proposed Bill Seeks to Keep North Carolina on Standard Time Year-Round

by | Mar 7, 2025

A new bill introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly aims to eliminate the biannual time change and keep the state on standard time throughout the entire year.

House Bill 12, sponsored by Representatives Warren, Bell, Campbell, and Willis, was referred to the House Committee on Rules, Calendar, and Operations on January 30, 2025. If passed, the legislation would amend state law to ensure North Carolina and its political subdivisions observe standard time permanently, in accordance with the Uniform Time Act of 1966.

The bill, if enacted, would take effect on March 8, 2026. Supporters argue that eliminating the switch between standard time and daylight saving time would provide consistency and reduce disruptions associated with the time change. However, any change to time observance would require federal approval.
