The Statesville Planning Board on Tuesday, August 26, recommended approval of a rezoning request that could pave the way for a large data center project in the city.
Compass Datacenters is seeking rezoning and annexation of 350 acres off Stamey Farm Road. The proposal has generated significant opposition from residents, many of whom voiced their concerns during the public hearing.
Despite the objections, the board voted 6-0 in favor of the request, stating that the project aligns with the planned future uses of the property, which is owned by the Stamey Land Company.
Plans for the project include five buildings totaling approximately 1.34 million square feet of space. Compass has not disclosed what business or businesses would ultimately operate within the facility but has said the center would not rely on water to cool its servers.
The rezoning and annexation requests will now move forward to the Statesville City Council for consideration on September 15.
