The Carolina Panthers were overpowered Sunday in Foxborough, falling 42–13 to the New England Patriots in a game where mistakes in all three phases proved costly.
Carolina struck first with an early touchdown, but the momentum quickly disappeared. Patriots return man Marcus Jones broke loose for an 87-yard punt return score in the first quarter and added another long return later in the game, finishing with a franchise-record 167 punt return yards.
The Panthers’ offense sputtered after its opening drive. Quarterback Bryce Young completed 18 of 30 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown but was unable to generate consistent production. The ground game also struggled to find openings against a disciplined New England defense.
Meanwhile, the Panthers’ defense was unable to contain Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who went 14 of 17 for 203 yards and two passing touchdowns while also running for a score. By halftime, New England held a commanding 28–6 lead.
Special teams miscues added to Carolina’s frustration. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald missed an extra point and a 55-yard field goal, while poor punt coverage repeatedly set up New England with favorable field position.
Head coach Dave Canales accepted responsibility for the loss, saying the breakdowns across offense, defense, and special teams ultimately fall on his shoulders.
The defeat drops the Panthers to 1–3 on the season. They will look to regroup at home next week when they face the winless Miami Dolphins in what is shaping up to be a crucial game to keep their season on track.
