A man died Monday afternoon after a house fire broke out in the 300 block of Sharon School Road in western Iredell County. Multiple fire departments and emergency crews responded to the scene after reports of flames coming from the home and a person possibly trapped inside.
According to emergency radio traffic, Iredell County ECOM received the 911 call shortly after 2:30 p.m. The caller reported that a man in a wheelchair was trapped in a back room of the residence as fire and smoke spread rapidly through the structure.
West Iredell Fire Department was first on the scene and confirmed a working fire with visible flames coming from the windows. Upon arrival, firefighters immediately began rescue efforts after learning the occupant was still inside. Firefighter 323 and additional crew members were able to reach the man and pull him from the burning home. Despite their efforts and the response of Iredell County EMS, the victim was pronounced deceased a short time later. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Crews from West Iredell, Troutman, Monticello, Stony Point, and Catawba County fire departments responded, along with Iredell County EMS and the Iredell Rescue Squad. Firefighters worked for more than an hour to bring the fire under control, with command declaring the scene stabilized around 3:40 p.m.
Sharon School Road was closed in both directions while responders established a water supply and worked to contain the blaze. Heavy smoke and fire damage were reported throughout the home.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the Iredell County Fire Marshal’s Office remain on scene as the investigation continues into the cause of the fire. Authorities have not released additional details about what may have sparked the blaze or whether smoke alarms were present in the home.
This marks one of several serious structure fires reported in Iredell County this fall, and local officials are reminding residents to check smoke detectors and ensure escape plans are in place, especially for those with limited mobility.
