Officials Warn Iredell County Residents of Toll Payment Scam

by | Mar 13, 2025

Residents of Iredell County have reported receiving fraudulent text messages claiming they owe money for unpaid tolls. Authorities warn that these messages are likely part of a scam targeting individuals across the country.

The scam messages state that the recipient has outstanding toll fees and must pay immediately. They often include a specific dollar amount and a link directing the recipient to enter banking or credit card information.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, these messages are part of a phishing scam designed to steal personal and financial information. Clicking on the link could expose sensitive data, such as driver’s license numbers and banking details, potentially leading to identity theft.

Officials advise residents not to click on any links or respond to unexpected text messages. To verify whether a toll payment request is legitimate, individuals should contact their state’s tolling agency using a verified phone number or website. It is important to avoid using any contact information provided in the suspicious text.

Residents are encouraged to report and delete scam messages. Most mobile devices offer a “report junk” option, and scam texts can also be forwarded to 7726 (SPAM) for review.
