North Carolina General Assembly Introduces Bill to Eliminate DEI Initiatives in Government

Raleigh, N.C. – A new bill introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly seeks to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives within state and local government operations.

The proposed legislation, titled “An Act Eliminating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives in State and Local Government and Clarifying the Penalty Provisions of the State Budget Act and Local Government Budget and Fiscal Control Act,” would prohibit state agencies from promoting, funding, or implementing DEI programs, policies, or initiatives.

According to the bill, state agencies would be barred from considering DEI in hiring and employment decisions, as well as from maintaining dedicated DEI staff positions. The legislation also aims to ensure that state government workplaces operate based on equality and merit.

Supporters of the bill argue that it will reinforce fairness by focusing on merit-based hiring and workplace practices, while opponents contend that removing DEI initiatives could reduce efforts to promote workplace diversity and inclusion.

The bill is currently under review by lawmakers. If passed, it could have significant implications for hiring practices and workplace policies within state and local government agencies.

Further discussions and potential amendments are expected as the legislative process continues.
