Raleigh, NC – North Carolina election officials have removed nearly 500,000 voter registration records from the state’s rolls in the first three months of 2025. The removals are part of a routine and legally mandated list maintenance process carried out by the State Board of Elections and county boards to ensure the accuracy of voter data.
Officials emphasize that the program is conducted under state and federal law, using a uniform and nondiscriminatory approach. The effort helps maintain the integrity of the voter registration system and reduces the risk of ineligible or duplicate registrations.
Most of the removals stem from a routine biennial process targeting voters who have not had any contact with election officials or voted in the past four federal elections. More than 419,000 of the records were associated with voters who were first marked inactive following a 2021 mailing and were later removed after remaining inactive through two more election cycles.
Other reasons for removal include voters who have died, moved out of state or county, been convicted of a felony, or requested to be removed. More than 25,000 records were removed due to death, and over 2,800 were removed due to felony convictions. State law requires the removal of voters serving felony sentences, including probation or parole. Once that sentence is complete, individuals regain the right to vote but must re-register.
In addition, over 43,000 voters were removed after moving, either within or outside the state, and more than 7,000 duplicate records were eliminated following database reviews.
As part of a law passed in 2024, clerks of superior court are now required to notify election officials of individuals excused from jury duty for non-citizenship. Five voters have been removed so far in 2025 through that process, with additional safeguards in place to confirm a registrant’s eligibility before removal.
North Carolina currently has more than 7.5 million registered voters. Election officials encourage residents to verify their voter registration status and ensure their information is accurate and up to date.
