NCDOT Update: I-77 lane closures for 150 widening project

by | Jul 15, 2025

Starting last night, July 14, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews began installing lane closures on Interstate 77 to start work on a new bridge at the interchange with N.C. 150. The closures are part of the $249 million N.C. 150 widening project between N.C. 16 in Catawba County and U.S. 21/N.C. 150 in Mooresville, and an improved interchange with I-77.

Crews have permanently closed the right lanes on I-77 in both directions approaching N.C. 150, shifting traffic to the inside lanes. Drivers can expect nightly closures from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Two travel lanes will be maintained in both directions along with access to and from N.C. 150.

The first phase will focus on building additional lanes to accommodate eastbound traffic. The second phase will add lanes for westbound traffic. The final phase will complete the transition to a 160-foot-wide structure featuring ten travel lanes, tying in the bridge to the existing roadway, and removing the existing bridge.

These corridor improvements will accommodate current and future traffic volumes and ease congestion.

Motorists are encouraged to pay attention when approaching the work zone, obey the posted speed limit, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
