NCDOT Begins Pavement Marking Upgrades on NC Mountain Roads

by | Oct 14, 2025

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has hired a contractor to enhance highway visibility by adding new pavement markings on three major routes in Watauga and Avery counties.

TRP Construction Group was awarded a $268,000 contract to install fresh pavement markings along nearly 30 miles of N.C. 105, U.S. 321, and N.C. 194.

The upgraded markings will use hot spray thermoplastic, a material known for its durability and higher reflectivity compared to standard paint. NCDOT recently used the same material on a section of King Street in Boone earlier this year.

Crews began removing existing stripes on N.C. 105 this week. Over the next month, new markings will be applied to:

  • N.C. 105 from just south of Broadstone Road to U.S. 221 in Linville
  • N.C. 194 from Hopewell Church Road to U.S. 421/221
  • U.S. 321 from U.S. 421 to the Tennessee state line

Most of the work is scheduled to take place at night, weather permitting.
