NC Supreme Court Race Still Undecided Amid Ballot Dispute

Legal battles continue over the outcome of North Carolina’s unresolved 2024 Supreme Court race, where Democrat Allison Riggs leads Republican Jefferson Griffin by just 734 votes out of more than 5.5 million cast.

The state Supreme Court recently upheld a lower court ruling that certain ballots should be excluded — specifically those cast by overseas voters who have never lived in the U.S., and others who failed to include required photo ID with absentee ballots.

The State Board of Elections estimates that up to 1,675 ballots fall under the review process, allowing voters to provide missing ID to ensure their votes are counted. However, Griffin’s legal team argues that more than 5,500 ballots across multiple counties should be subject to review, accusing the board of narrowly applying the court’s order.

Riggs and her allies have asked federal courts to block the board from removing any ballots, arguing that changing rules after votes are cast violates federal law. While a judge allowed the ballot review process to proceed, he temporarily barred certification of the election.

Both candidates have recused themselves from any court deliberations related to the case.
