by | Jan 21, 2025

Around 8:11 am this morning McDowell County 911 received an anonymous call of a possible active shooter at McDowell High School. Law enforcement and emergency personnel immediately responded. Local, state, and federal law enforcement has conducted a thorough search of the building, and reports indicate there were no victims. Fortunately, no shots were heard, and there is currently no confirmed threat to students or staff.

Sheriff Ricky Buchanan, McDowell County School Superintendent Tracy Grit and Emergency Services Director Will Kehler have actively led the response efforts, ensuring the situation is handled with the utmost seriousness and care. They are supported by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel.

For student and parent emotional support, students will be released from McDowell High School and West McDowell Middle School at 10 am this morning. Buses will be released from campus first and car riders to follow. To ensure dismissal safety we ask that parents proceed with caution and care as many law enforcement officers are present to assist with dismal.
