At a recent McDowell Chamber of Commerce meeting, Robin Nichols provided insights into the significant impact Hurricane Helene had on Duke Energy’s operations and the company’s extensive recovery efforts.
During the storm’s peak, Duke Energy experienced transmission losses to 60% of its grid, severely affecting power distribution across the region. In response, an additional 20,000 crew members from other states and Canada were brought in to aid in restoration efforts, ensuring power was restored as quickly and safely as possible.
Nichols also addressed the long-term challenges, stating, “Complete repair to our infrastructure will take years, not months.”
In addition to its recovery operations, Duke Energy has contributed more than $2.5 million in grants to support businesses and charitable organizations in Western North Carolina. These funds aim to aid the region’s recovery and strengthen community resilience.
The McDowell Chamber of Commerce commended the collaborative efforts and support provided to local communities during and after the storm.
