ASHEBORO, N.C. — Pat Simmons, the esteemed Director and CEO of the North Carolina Zoo since 2015, passed away Monday after a nearly five-year battle with cancer.
Simmons began her distinguished career as Director of the Akron Zoo in Ohio, serving from 1985 to 2014. She brought more than four decades of zoological leadership experience to Asheboro, where her influence shaped the North Carolina Zoo’s mission and growth.
Under her guidance, the zoo celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024 and achieved national recognition, including being named “Best Zoo in the Country” by Newsweek. She also spearheaded landmark expansion plans, including the development of the Asia habitat scheduled to open in 2026 and laying groundwork for a future Australia region.
Zoo officials described Simmons as “a force to be reckoned with,” beloved for her intelligence, humor, and passion. “Pat loved animals and people with her whole heart,” the zoo shared in a statement. “She was a sought-after mentor and counselor, helping many find their true passion.”
Cheryl Armstrong, Executive Director of the North Carolina Zoo Society, reflected on her passing, saying:
“Pat laughed easily and often and extended her warmth toward everyone. The kindness, integrity, and moxie that Pat instilled will survive long into the future.”
Beyond North Carolina, Simmons was widely respected in the zoo community. She served as Chairwoman of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums board in 2012 and as a board member for the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, demonstrating national and global leadership in animal conservation.
Her passing leaves behind a vibrant legacy of conservation, education, and community engagement. As the zoo continues its mission, staff and visitors alike will remember her vision, dedication, and the habitats she helped build to protect wildlife.
Memorial services are expected to be announced soon. The zoo remains open, honoring Simmons through its continued commitment to her transformative work.
