Local Partners Continue Holiday Tradition of Feeding Kids and First Responders

by | Dec 9, 2025

For the fifth year in a row, Burritos and Ribs owner Ana Johnson and Iredell-Statesville Schools Director of Student Well-Being and Alternative Services Mark Vaughn joined forces over the Thanksgiving holiday to provide warm meals to first responders and homeless, foster, and housing-insecure children.

The tradition began on a previous Black Friday when Vaughn, a regular customer, mentioned his desire to help vulnerable students during the holidays. Johnson overheard the conversation and immediately stepped in to offer her support. Since then, the annual meal has grown into a community effort.

This year, the team served 300 plates of ACP, with all ingredients and preparation donated by Johnson. Troutman Mayor Teross Young helped secure drinks and cookies from Food Lion to round out the holiday meal.

Vaughn said Johnson has been an invaluable partner to Iredell-Statesville Schools, helping ensure students in need feel cared for during the holiday season.

The pair will team up again on December 26 at 11 a.m. to provide another holiday meal for struggling children and first responders. Organizers expect this event to be even larger, with local businesses contributing to make it a memorable Christmas for area kids. They plan to serve 500 meals, available for dine-in, takeout, or delivery by volunteers.

Those interested in volunteering for the Christmas meal may contact Johnson at (980) 276-0234 or Vaughn at mvaughn@iss.k12.nc.us.
