The Labor Day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign begins today, August 25, and will run through September 7. The statewide initiative is focused on reducing impaired driving during one of the busiest holiday travel periods of the year.
The campaign includes increased law enforcement presence, with additional patrols and sobriety checkpoints across North Carolina. Officials are reminding drivers to arrange sober transportation or designate a driver to prevent crashes, injuries, and fatalities linked to impaired driving.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP), which is coordinating the effort, said the goal is to reduce impaired driving incidents over the holiday weekend, a time historically associated with higher crash rates. The program also highlights the potential consequences of impaired driving, including loss of driving privileges, jail time, and financial penalties.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation, GHSP, and local law enforcement agencies are working together to carry out the campaign. In addition to targeting impaired driving, officials are reminding motorists to remain alert for pedestrians and school buses as the school year begins.
