Jury Deliberates in Fatal Golf Cart Crash Trial

by | Dec 15, 2025

Jury deliberations began Friday, Dec. 12, following more than six days of testimony in the trial of a man accused of crashing into a golf cart and killing three people in Iredell County.

Austin Ray Harmon, 26, faces three counts of felony death by vehicle, three counts of serious injury by vehicle, felony driving while impaired, and reckless driving with wanton disregard.

The charges stem from a June 13, 2022, collision on Fort Dobbs Road near Statesville. Prosecutors allege Harmon’s vehicle struck a golf cart that was traveling on the roadway, resulting in the deaths of 39-year-old Michael Shane Marlowe, 13-year-old Jada Marlowe, and 5-year-old Bentley Marlowe. Several others were injured in the crash.

During the trial, the prosecution acknowledged that the golf cart should not have been operating on the roadway at the time of the collision.

Jurors heard closing arguments from both the prosecution and defense Friday morning before beginning deliberations later that afternoon. Deliberations are scheduled to resume Monday, Dec. 15, at the Iredell County courthouse in Statesville.
