Iredell Memorial Hospital has announced the selection of its inaugural class of internal medicine resident physicians. This group of seven residents will begin their training on July 1, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the hospital as it transitions into Iredell County’s first teaching hospital for resident physicians.
Over the past six months, the hospital received more than 600 applications for its newly accredited internal medicine residency program. The program participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), a system that pairs medical school graduates with residency programs based on mutual preferences. Securing a full class in its first year is considered a major accomplishment.
“This is an incredible achievement for our health system as we transform from a community hospital into a teaching hospital,” said John Green, President & CEO of Iredell Health System.
Match Day, which took place on March 21, is a pivotal moment for medical students as they learn which residency program they have been placed into. At Iredell, residents will undergo three years of training to become board-certified internal medicine physicians.
“We look forward to welcoming our first class of residents who will spend the next three years completing their pathway to board certification,” said Joseph Mazzola, DO, VPMA, and Designated Institutional Official.
The residency program has been approved for a total of 21 residents, with each class consisting of seven. As they train, the residents will become part of the local community, living and working in Iredell County.
