Iredell County, NC – Eight students from the Boys & Girls Club of the Piedmont spent July exploring healthcare careers through the MedStem Camp hosted by Iredell Health System. The program provided students with hands-on experiences across a wide range of hospital departments.

“I was really interested in the operating room and learning about the different surgical equipment,” said student Rishidharan Jayakumar. “My goal is to become a neurosurgeon.”

Throughout the month, students explored nearly every area of the hospital, including cardiopulmonary rehab, the emergency department, biomedical engineering, maintenance, skilled nursing, and radiation therapy. Staff led engaging demonstrations, games, and activities that gave students a closer look into daily hospital operations.

“My favorite department was endoscopy as we got to participate in a hands-on activity,” said Blake Sabatino. Students were guided by the endoscopy team in using a scope during a simulated procedure.

The camp also included tours of an ambulance and the helicopter pad, suiting up for an operating room experience, and even a visit to the hospital’s morgue. Each stop sparked curiosity and excitement among the students.

Isabella Cuesta, who hopes to become a nurse or nurse practitioner, found the surgical department particularly inspiring. “It was fascinating how they work as a team in the operating room. I loved getting to see a surgery in action!”

Iredell Health System staff were excited to share their passion with the next generation of healthcare workers.

“I love working with students,” said Angela Whicker, Education Specialist. “MedStem Camp is filled with adventures waiting to be discovered.” She emphasized the importance of hands-on learning, especially for high school students exploring potential career paths. “The students receive valuable information through hands-on learning that prepares them for the future.”

Iredell Health System is proud to invest in future healthcare professionals through meaningful community partnerships like this one.
