Iredell County, N.C. – A man who reported a break-in at his home is now facing felony charges after authorities discovered firearms he was legally prohibited from possessing.

On March 17, 2025, Anthony Leroy Wellman contacted the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office to report a breaking and entering at his residence. Wellman stated that a suspect had forcibly entered his safe and stolen a substantial amount of cash. Deputies launched an investigation, which remains ongoing.

During their response, deputies observed multiple firearms inside the home and determined they belonged to Wellman. Further investigation revealed that Wellman, a convicted felon, was legally prohibited from possessing firearms. Authorities determined that he was aware of this restriction but knowingly had the weapons in his possession.

When deputies attempted to retrieve the firearms, Wellman became uncooperative and was detained. Detectives were called to assist, and a search warrant was obtained for the residence. Upon execution of the warrant, investigators seized multiple firearms, ammunition, firearm accessories, and a weapon of mass destruction.

Wellman was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Magistrate Russell issued a secured bond of $50,000.

The investigation into the stolen cash is ongoing.
