Firefighters from Catawba County joined multiple agencies in battling a serious structure fire in Iredell County on Monday, December 22, after reports indicated people were trapped inside a home on Barbary Drive.

The West Iredell Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the scene just before 11:30 a.m., with additional support from fire departments in Troutman, Catawba, Monticello and Stony Point. Iredell County Emergency Medical Services and the Iredell County Rescue Squad also responded.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the structure. Firefighters quickly worked to control the blaze and ensure all occupants were accounted for. Three children and one adult sustained burns and smoke inhalation, prompting the response of additional EMS units and a medical helicopter.

The fire was brought under control shortly before noon. One child was airlifted to a hospital for further treatment, while the remaining injured occupants were transported by ground ambulance.

A firefighter was injured during the response after falling through a compromised section of the floor. The extent of the firefighter’s injuries has not been released.

Officials are asking the community to remember the family displaced by the fire on Barbary Drive. The family lost their home, and one child sustained severe injuries. Emergency responders credited the coordinated efforts of all personnel on scene for maintaining a safe operation in a high-stress environment.
