Iredell County has earned a Civic Excellence in Innovation Award from the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) in recognition of its Mobile Health Unit. The award was presented during the NCACC’s annual conference, held August 21-23 in Greenville, North Carolina.
Presented in partnership with Civic Federal Credit Union, the award recognizes successful county programs that demonstrate innovative solutions and cost/resource savings for counties.
“It was an honor for our mobile health team to receive this award for excellence in innovation. It is a powerful recognition of the hard work, creativity, and compassion that drives our mobile health clinic,” shared Brady Freeman, director of the Iredell County Health Department. “We are honored to serve our community in new and meaningful ways, and this award inspires us to keep pushing boundaries to improve access to care.”
The Mobile Health Unit, which began serving the Iredell County community in fall 2024, bridges the gap of delivering essential healthcare services directly to communities in need. By offering preventative care, screenings, vaccinations, and health education, the Mobile Health Unit addresses critical health challenges and barriers for patients such as limited transportation and geographic isolation. By meeting people where they are, the unit promotes equity, improves overall community health, and demonstrates the innovative spirit of the Health Department.
Freeman, along with Mobile Health Unit Coordinator and Registered Nurse Tawana Covington, Unit driver and clerical support Shaun Smith, and Commissioner Gene Houpe, accepted the award in Greenville on Thursday, August 21.
To be eligible for a 2025 Excellence in Innovation Award, programs must have been implemented or enhanced between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024. Entries were judged by county leaders, staff and past winners based on innovation, measurable results, efficient use of resources, and replicability for other counties.
