Iredell County Approves Bonds for Weathers Creek High School

by | Jan 23, 2025

Statesville, NC – The Iredell County Board of Commissioners has taken a significant step towards the construction of a new Weathers Creek High School. During their January 21st meeting, the board approved resolutions authorizing the issuance of $123.9 million in bonds to finance the project.

This decision comes after a period of considerable deliberation and adjustments to the project’s budget. Voters initially approved an $80 million referendum for the new school in March 2020. However, escalating construction costs over the past four years necessitated significant budget increases.

Early estimates for the project soared well beyond the initial budget, prompting concerns and delays within the county. Following careful consideration, the commissioners agreed in August 2024 to allocate $120 million towards the school’s construction.

Continued collaboration between county officials and the project’s general contractor, Monteith Construction Corp., led to a revised budget of $130 million. This revised budget incorporates cost-saving measures while ensuring the school meets the necessary educational standards and community needs.

To fund the project, the county will utilize a combination of an $83.9 million general obligation bond and a $40 million limited obligation bond. Additionally, $10 million will be drawn from the county’s fund balance.

The new Weathers Creek High School is anticipated to significantly enhance educational opportunities for students in the Iredell-Statesville Schools district.
