The Iredell-Statesville Schools (I-SS) Board of Education has approved a plan to cut more than $3 million from its proposed 2025-2026 budget. The decision was made during the board’s meeting on Monday, April 14, following recommendations presented by Chief Finance Officer Adam Steele and other district administrators during a prior Committee of the Whole meeting.
The cost-saving measures are aimed at addressing funding shortfalls and include reductions across personnel, programs, and services. The board voted unanimously in favor of the plan.
As part of the approved cuts, 12 teaching positions will not be filled in the next school year. District officials stated that these reductions will occur through attrition, resulting in a projected savings of $990,000.
In addition, four positions within the central office have been eliminated, including roles in student services, maintenance, office support, and coordination. These changes, along with other adjustments within the central office, are expected to save approximately $660,032.
One of the most notable changes involves the closure of the I-SS Virtual Academy at the end of the current school year. This move is projected to save $521,940. While the academy will no longer operate, district officials indicated that students will continue to have access to virtual learning through I-Academy and Virtual I-SS.
The budget also includes a $582,500 reduction in costs related to instructional supplies, school nutrition, and building improvements. Additionally, the district plans to cut back on programs and IT software, resulting in a savings of $286,250.
During the public comment period at Monday’s meeting, a parent of a virtual academy student asked the board to reconsider the closure of the academy. However, the board proceeded with the approved plan as presented.
In total, the adopted budget reductions amount to $3,040,722. The district has not announced any further budget decisions but indicated that it will continue monitoring financial needs and adjustments as planning for the next school year continues.
