Statesville, NC – The Statesville Police Department is investigating a homicide following a shooting that occurred Saturday afternoon, August 2, 2025, in the 1000 block of Fifth Street.
Authorities were dispatched to the area at approximately 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers located 51-year-old Surtonia Burton, a Fifth Street resident, lying in front of a home with multiple gunshot wounds.
Burton was transported by Iredell County EMS for emergency medical treatment but died from her injuries a short time later.
The Statesville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene to process evidence and begin the investigation. Through their efforts, 26-year-old Titeon Breshaun Burton, also of Fifth Street, was identified as the primary suspect.
At around 4:45 p.m., officers located Titeon Burton at a business on Oakland Avenue. When officers attempted to detain him, he fled on foot. Police pursued him to the rear of a residence on Broom Street, where he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers approached. He was transported by EMS but was pronounced deceased on the way to the hospital.
The Statesville Police Department has expressed condolences to the Burton family and stated the investigation remains active.
