A man currently on trial for a fatal 2022 DWI crash is now facing additional charges after authorities say he was found with Suboxone inside the Iredell County Detention Center.

According to court records, 26-year-old Austin Ray Harmon — who is already charged with three counts of felony death by vehicle, three counts of serious injury by vehicle, felony driving while impaired, and reckless driving with wanton disregard — was charged Monday with multiple drug-related offenses. Harmon has been on trial for the 2022 crash on Fort Dobbs Road that left three people dead and several others seriously injured.

A magistrate’s order filed Monday states that as the trial concluded, Harmon was found in possession of Suboxone, also known as buprenorphine, while housed at the detention center. He now faces additional charges of felony possession of a controlled substance on prison or jail premises, misdemeanor simple possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

The paraphernalia, according to the order, consisted of a small plastic bag used to store the substance. Authorities have not released further details about how the Suboxone was discovered or whether additional security measures will be taken at the jail.
