ASHEBORO, N.C. — The North Carolina Zoo is mourning the loss of Leia, a 15-year-old giraffe who had been part of the Zoo family since 2010. Her death comes just one day after the passing of long-time Zoo Director and CEO Pat Simmons.

Leia died on Tuesday following a planned medical procedure to treat a foot injury. Although veterinarians expected a full recovery, she experienced acute aspiration during recovery. According to the Zoo, aspiration is a known risk associated with anesthesia, particularly in giraffes, and is considered the leading cause of complications during surgical procedures for the species.

A necropsy confirmed aspiration as the official cause of death.

Leia’s passing has deeply affected Zoo staff, especially her caretakers, medical personnel, and volunteers who had worked closely with her for years. Grief counselors have been made available to support employees during this difficult time. The Zoo has asked for privacy and compassion as staff continue to grieve.

“We are so grateful to the community and our loyal supporters for the outpouring of love during this incredibly challenging time,” said Deputy Director Diane Villa. “Your warmth and kind words are a comfort to us all as we navigate loss and begin our journey toward healing.”
