Fraud Attempt at Local Home Under Investigation in Iredell County

by | Aug 14, 2025

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported fraud-in-progress at a local residence.

According to the sheriff’s office, a couple received a call from someone claiming to be a fraud agent with their bank. The caller allegedly told them that $10,000 had been “wrongfully deposited” into their account and instructed them to withdraw the money. The couple was told that someone would come to their home to collect the funds.

Deputies reported that the caller kept one of the victims on the phone, providing step-by-step instructions. The couple became suspicious and contacted law enforcement. Deputies responded to the home and waited for the person scheduled to arrive.

A short time later, a vehicle pulled up. Deputies determined that the driver was a rideshare driver who had been hired through a mobile app to pick up a package and deliver it to a convenience store parking lot in Charlotte.

The couple was able to return the money to their bank with assistance from deputies. The case has been turned over to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit, which is working to identify the suspects.

The sheriff’s office advises residents to be cautious of unsolicited calls requesting money or personal information, and notes that legitimate banks do not arrange cash pickups at a person’s home.
