NATIONWIDE — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advisory warning consumers not to eat certain lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp sold at Walmart stores nationwide.
The product, processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (BMS Foods), tested positive for Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope. Three affected lots carry a best-by date of March 15, 2027.
The FDA said no contaminated product has been confirmed on U.S. shelves but noted the shrimp “appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions” that could pose a safety risk. The company has since been placed on the FDA’s import alert list to block future shipments linked to chemical contamination.
Testing showed levels of Cesium-137 at about 68 Bq/kg, which is below the FDA’s intervention threshold. However, repeated low-dose exposure may increase long-term cancer risks by damaging DNA, according to the agency.
