A woman was killed in a crash Thursday, March 6, in Iredell County. The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce of Statesville.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the crash at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of Old Mocksville Road and Jane Sowers Road. According to investigators, a 2000 Saturn passenger car was traveling east on Jane Sowers Road when it attempted to turn left from a stop sign onto Old Mocksville Road. The vehicle turned into the path of a southbound 2011 Ford F-150, resulting in a collision.
The driver of the Saturn, Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 16-year-old from Statesville, sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to a nearby hospital.
The initial investigation does not suggest that impairment or speed contributed to the crash. No charges have been filed at this time.
