Earthquake Recorded Near Tennessee-North Carolina Border Saturday Morning

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake was confirmed Saturday morning, May 10, near the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was felt in parts of western North Carolina, including Alexander, Catawba, Burke, and Caldwell counties.

The USGS initially reported the quake as a 3.5 magnitude event at 9:10 a.m., following detection in several locations across the region, including Greenback, Maryville, Seymour, and as far south as Atlanta, Georgia. The agency later revised the magnitude to 4.1 at approximately 9:20 a.m. after further analysis.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 12 miles southeast of Greenback, Tennessee, and occurred at a depth of roughly 16 miles beneath the surface. Despite being widely felt, no injuries or property damage had been reported as of Saturday afternoon.

USGS continues to monitor the area and assess any aftershock activity. Residents who experienced the quake are encouraged to report their observations through the agency’s “Did You Feel It?” program to help improve data collection and response efforts.
