Lake Norman, NC – June 15, 2025

A weekend outing at Lake Norman turned tragic after a person drowned near the Sherrills Ford area, prompting a large-scale emergency response and a two-day search.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon near channel marker 20. Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including fire and rescue units from surrounding counties, responded to the scene and initiated a search operation. Specialized sonar equipment and boats were deployed in the effort.

The search was temporarily suspended Saturday night around 9:45 p.m. due to approaching storms and resumed early Sunday morning. The victim’s body was recovered around noon on Sunday. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the individual involved.

Officials asked boaters in the area to avoid the search zone and reduce wakes to aid in the sonar search efforts.

The drowning at Lake Norman was one of two reported over the weekend in the region, with another incident occurring at Moss Lake in Cleveland County. Local officials are reminding the public to use caution when swimming or boating, particularly as summer activity increases on area lakes.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
