Charlotte, NC – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has confirmed the arrest of one of its officers, Matthew Michael, on two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. The charges involve a juvenile family member and are related to an off-duty incident.

Following the arrest, CMPD placed Officer Michael on administrative leave without pay while an internal investigation is conducted. The department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is reviewing the case and has pledged full cooperation with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing criminal investigation.

In a statement, CMPD emphasized its commitment to accountability and transparency, particularly in cases involving allegations of misconduct. “We take all allegations seriously, especially those affecting the safety and well-being of children,” the department said.

CMPD also acknowledged that, due to the nature of the investigation and personnel policies, further details cannot be disclosed at this time. However, the department reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its core values of integrity, human life, and adherence to its oath of office.

The case remains under investigation by both CMPD and the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office. Further updates are expected as the legal process unfolds.
