Statesville, N.C. – A Charlotte man arrested in a case investigated by the Statesville Police Department has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison.
Trevaris Devar Kennedy, 21, received a 46-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a machine gun. The sentencing, announced by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina, took place on Thursday, March 20.
According to court documents, the case stems from an incident on December 22, 2023, when a Statesville police officer attempted to stop a vehicle with an expired registration tag. Kennedy, a passenger in the vehicle, was present when the driver sped away. After the vehicle stopped, the driver attempted to flee on foot while two firearms were thrown from the passenger window into a wooded area.
Officers later recovered a Glock Model 19, 9mm, and a stolen Glock Model 26, 9mm, both equipped with extended magazines and illegal “Glock switches,” which convert firearms into fully automatic weapons. Authorities also seized 55 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Kennedy was arrested on January 5, 2024. A forensic analysis of his phone revealed videos and photos showing him with multiple firearms, including those fitted with Glock switches. Investigators also found messages indicating he was selling the devices on social media.
At the time of his arrest, Kennedy was on probation for previous convictions and was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. He remains in federal custody and will be transferred to a federal prison once a facility is designated. As of March 21, he was being held in the Catawba County Detention Facility.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson credited the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Statesville Police Department for their roles in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Kinlaw prosecuted the case.
