Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has solidified its position as a major aviation hub, ranking as the third busiest connecting airport in the United States. In 2024, the airport handled a record-breaking 58.8 million passengers, marking a 10% increase from the previous year. Aircraft movements also saw an 11% rise, totaling 596,583 takeoffs and landings.
A significant factor contributing to CLT’s growth is its role as a primary hub for American Airlines, which accounts for approximately 90% of the airport’s traffic. During the summer months from May through September, American Airlines is projected to operate around 72,000 flights out of CLT.
International travel through CLT also experienced a notable uptick, with a 13% increase from 2.1 million passengers in 2023 to 2.4 million in 2024. The airport currently serves 42 international destinations and is home to three foreign flag carriers.
Looking ahead, CLT continues to expand its global reach. Etihad Airways is set to launch a direct flight from Charlotte to Abu Dhabi on May 4, 2026, marking the airport’s first route to the Middle East and its longest scheduled flight at approximately 15 hours. This addition will make Etihad CLT’s fourth international carrier.
With these developments, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is poised to maintain and enhance its status as a key player in both domestic and international air travel.
