TROUTMAN, N.C. — A capuchin monkey escaped from Zootastic Park in Troutman on Wednesday morning, sparking a search by zoo staff and local animal services after it was seen climbing power lines and hiding in nearby woods.

Zoo owner Scottie Brown confirmed the monkey, a breeder from the facility, squeezed through wire bars of its enclosure and slipped out. Once outside, it was spotted by locals hopping along power lines near Oswald Amity Road, not far from Zootastic.

Residents reported mixed reactions — some concerned, others simply curious. One witness said he initially thought he saw a squirrel, only to realize it was the escaped monkey. Neighbors have been scanning the trees with binoculars, hoping to catch a glimpse.

Authorities from Iredell County Animal Services are advising the public not to attempt to catch or approach the monkey. If spotted, people are urged to contact animal services at 704-878-5335.

Brown believes the animal may eventually return to its enclosure on its own, noting that it often does not travel far. In the meantime, he and his team continue searching the area.
